How to Mirror your Android Phone Screen to a Windows 10 PC Without Installing any Additional Apps

There are times where you would like to present a PowerPoint to your audience or mirror what is on your phone to a large monitor for convenience. This is now very doable in Windows 10 by using the Connect application. This allows you to roam around the room and even annotate on the screen  from your Android device all of this via a wireless connection.

The steps are pretty simple as also outlined in the video below

  1. Open up the Connect application from your Windows 10 laptop. Note, the computer must have the anniversary updates (August 2016 update) installed for this to work
  2. Then on your Android device go to Settings and locate screen sharing or mirroring and choose to enable it.
  3. Once your laptop is located, now connect to it and that is it. See the video below for more step-by-step details.

How to Free up and Reclaim 20+ GB of Storage when Using a Solid State Drive in Windows 10

Every time you upgrade from one version of Windows to another, the system retains a copy of your previous version in case you want to go back. This is true when upgrading Windows 8.x to Windows 10 or even Windows 10 to Windows 10 Anniversary Edition. When you do this, you will typically lose around 20GB of storage from your hard drive. So the question is how can you reclaim some of the lost storage?

This can be a problem particularly when using a Solid State Drive or you are already running out of space. In this case, the solution is to simply remove the backup copy of the previous Windows version. Do this only when you are sure the  upgrade was successful and you do not intend to go back.

If you are sure and want to reclaim your hard drive space, check out this brief 3 minute tutorial.

Windows 10: To Upgrade, or Not to Upgrade? That is the Question….

Many have been asking me recently whether it is worth upgrading to Windows 10. After all it is a free upgrade for those that have Windows 7 or 8.x. So here is my opinion so far.

New Features and Enhancements

I have been using it for quite a while now even when it was in a closed beta and overall I would recommend taking advantage of the upgrade. Besides the Windows 7 like Start Menu, it offers faster performance along with some new features such as the built-in search capabilities for anything. And I have outlined these features in a full tutorial from my http://youtube.com/skaceli channel.

Easy Upgrade Process

The installation files are automatically downloaded to the computer and the system settings are preserved. It appears that Microsoft tried to make the transition as easy as possible to upgrade. The upgrade seems to take about 8GB of additional storage in your computer (just in case you decide to revert back) and it preserves the system settings such as installed printers, applications etc. Of course, this is a major upgrade thus if your settings are too complicated and you have older applications in your computer, that may not be totally the case.

If you are part of a small business workgroup network where you are sharing files and accessing other resources without a password, it appears that Windows 10 will require a password to login, i.e. the shares may need to be reconfigured.

Once Upgraded, the License Upgraded

Once you move to Windows 10, it appears that Microsoft then upgrades your license code to Windows 10 automatically. Do you get a new license code? No. It somehow records it on the BIOS and online. This then allows you to do a clean install of Windows 10 at any point without needing the license code. Stay tuned. I will post a new article and video on how to reload from scratch. For now it is good to do the upgrade as it also upgrades the license.

Free? What is the Catch?

My perception is that Microsoft is taking an aggressive approach to moving to one integrated platform across mobile and PC and at the same time offer personalized services via Cortana like Google with Google Search (Google Now) and Apple with Siri. That of course includes location/search history based services/advertising. For those that are concerned about the privacy and/or do not prefer to use these services, check this article I have put together on Customizing Privacy Settings During or After the Windows 10 Upgrade. A video is available for customizing the privacy settings as well.

How to Customize Windows 10 Privacy Settings During and After the Upgrade

Windows 10 is a free upgrade for now for Windows 7 and 8.x users and the process for the upgrade is very refined and easy for anyone. The files are usually automatically downloaded by Microsoft and the settings are preserved after the upgrade. Some are already taking advantage of the free upgrade which offers new features along with improved computer performance. However, others are concerned about the privacy. So what is the deal? Should I upgrade or still wait? That is one of the questions I have been getting recently.

I personally have upgraded and am enjoying the features it offers which I have also outlined in this Windows 10 tutorial. Microsoft is trying to offer personalized services similar to what Google offers via Google Search (Google Now) and Apple through Siri. Basically, it tracks what you search, what you do and then offers you personalized location/search based services. For those of you that are concerned about the privacy you can customize the settings both during the upgrade and after the upgrade.

During the upgrade process, you can uncheck the settings as outlined in the snapshots.

  1. Basically start the upgrade and be ready for it to take at least 45-90 minutes based on the speed of your computer. During the upgrade process, when you come to the following screens, customize the settings as below.
w10-1 customize settings initial option

The first set of setting to customize during the upgrade

w10-2 personalization and location

The second set of settings to customize during the upgrade

w10-3 customize settings connectivity

The third set of settings to tweak during the upgrade

w10-4 customize settings

The fourth set of settings to customize during the upgrade of Windows 10

w10-5 use cortana

The last set of settings to customize during the Windows 10 upgrade

2. If you already upgraded and want to still customize the settings, then check this video from the http://youtube.com/skaceli channel.

Protecting your Computer Against Malware & Remedy When Infected

A lot can happen to your computer in just a few minutes nowadays. You could be browsing the web and then all of a sudden you are asked to download a plugin and you thinking that it is needed, you click to allow it. Then in just a few seconds one thing after another is downloaded and you have opened the door to your computer for all kinds of malware. You see all kinds of registry optimizers, backup solutions and even advertisements more than ever before. This is the case where your computer is now infected and vulnerable to attacks.

So what can be done to prevent this?

Here is just a brief list:

  1. Keep your operating system up to date. Set your Windows Update to update your computer automatically or check your computer weekly or biweekly for any new updates.
  2. Update your Adobe Flash Player. This would be the case if you are still using Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. I suggest that you actually switch to using Google Chrome, which automatically updates the Flash Player. It is actually built in to Chrome.
  3. Update or uninstall Java. Java is an application that is needed for certain functions in the computer. Unfortunately, since it is so widely used, it is also very vulnerable. The best is to simply uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs and see if you need it. If you do not, then that is safer. If you still somehow have to have it, update it only when you are not actively browsing the web i.e. if you are on the web e.g. on Facebook and then you are asked to update it, do not do it from there. Update it from the taskbar on the bottom right. Also, when you update it, make sure you uninstall the extra options on the subsequent screens.
  4. Use common sense. If something does not look right, do not click to allow it.
  5. Have kids use their own PC. In some cases if you do banking on your computer and the kids play games on the same computer, it is best if the kids use a different inexpensive PC. It is very easy for kids to download all kinds of stuff on the PC.

What if already infected with malware?

In this case you will need to run a bunch of tools to clean it. It also depends on what spyware and malware is in your computer at that time.  It is also important to understand that unless you completely wipe out everything, it is not for sure that your computer is malware free. Below is a video that includes all the steps and some tools that you can use to remove malware in your computer.

Tablets & the Ability to Handwrite

I am amazed how even though technology in mobile devices is moving so fast nowadays, it still lags behind in a couple areas. Such areas include:

  • Handwriting: In addition to using the touch screen options that we always use, one would also use a stylus for notetaking for meetings, events or in school as a student. Of course there are options such as the Galaxy Note 8, Note 10.1, Note 12.2 and even smartphones such as Note 2 and Note 3. Yet it would be even nicer to have this capability for the Tab S 8.4 or the iPad Mini.
  • Ability to connect to a projector: It would be nice to have a standardized option for tablets, TVs and projectors to easily connect and project for teaching and meetings etc. Of course Chromecast is coming close, but not quite there yet.
  • Thin bezel: No one wants to see a bunch of plastic on their tablet. It would be nice to have them thinner. They are getting there like in the case of the Tab S 8.4.

Until recently, since Samsung did not come out with an updated version of Galaxy Note 8, I decided to give a try to the Note 10.1. I initially was not really wanting a bigger tablet as the 8″ was perfect to even fit in a pocket. However, with the Galaxy Note 10.1, I am finding that it great for multitasking i.e. having two apps open at the same time on the screen. And this is due to its high resolution. So at this point and time, this is the tablet that I recommend.

My currently preferred tablet

note 10.1
Galaxy Note 10.1

One might say, what about the iPad Mini and latest versions of iPad. I have tried the Mini and while it is a nice little device with a pretty cool design, it lacks the handwriting capability.
